The Sequential Intercept Model is a nationally recognized framework conceptualizing the linear movement of people with mental illness through the criminal justice system and is intended to address the over-representation of adults with mental illness in the criminal justice system.
Arlington uses a criminal justice Sequential Intercept Model approach for diverting individuals with serious behavioral health issues into treatment and out of incarceration. The model includes five intercepts:
- Intercept 1: Law Enforcement/Mental Health Emergency Services
- Intercept 2 and 2.5: Initial Detention/Initial Court Hearings
- Intercept 3: Jails/Courts
- Intercept 4: Re-entry
- Intercept 5: Community Corrections/Community Support
